Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): built to get you cited, not just ranked.

Generative Engine Optimization, GEO, is the discipline of getting a law firm named, quoted, and linked inside the answer an AI system gives, rather than merely ranked among ten blue links underneath it. You may know this by another name: AI Answer Optimization, AI visibility, AI-optimized content. They describe the same discipline. From here forward, on this site, it is GEO.

A growing share of the people who will need a lawyer this year are not typing a query into Google and scanning results. They are asking Google's AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity, or a peer model directly, and receiving a direct answer, sometimes with specific firm names attached. If your firm's content is not structured to be understood, trusted, and quoted by those systems, you are not in the running. Not lower in the running. Not in it.

A citation inside the answer outranks a link nobody clicks.
§ How answer engines choose

What actually earns a citation.

An AI model cannot cite what it cannot parse, trust, or lift a direct answer from. Four things determine whether it cites you.

foundation

Structural clarity

A model that has to guess where a heading ends and an answer begins skips the page. Clean semantic HTML, one clear topic per section, and a heading hierarchy that mirrors how a person would actually ask the question, all make a page legible to a crawler that reads structure, not design.

hub

Schema & structured data

Schema.org markup, Organization, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, tells an answer engine explicitly what a page is and who is behind it, instead of leaving the model to infer it from prose. Every Nitrosite page ships this markup from launch, not as a later add-on.

account_balance

Demonstrated authority

Google calls it E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trust. The same signal that keeps legal content on the right side of Google's helpful content system is what convinces a model your firm is a credible source to quote, rather than one more undifferentiated legal blog.

description

Answerable content

A page written to be quoted states its answer plainly, near the top, in the same words a person would use to ask. Content built to slowly build suspense across 2,000 words of throat-clearing gives a model nothing clean to lift, and it moves on to a competitor's page that does.

§ The intellect

One data engine, two visibility surfaces.

GEO is not a separate program bolted onto SEO. It is steered by the same data engine. GA4 and Search Console tell us what people already search for and click through to. Independent ranking, technical, and competitor intelligence tell us where a firm stands against the market. That single, continuously refreshed picture feeds one ranked action list, and the actions on it serve classic rankings and AI citations at once, because the underlying fix, cleaner structure, better schema, a clearer answer, helps both.

We also run our own primary research into how answer engines actually behave. Our cross-platform study of legal service queries across four leading models found that how a person asks matters enormously: a question that names a city and a practice area surfaces a named firm about 70 percent of the time, while a cost or comparison question ("how much does a criminal defense lawyer cost") does so only 10 percent of the time. That is exactly the kind of finding that should change what a firm writes, and where.

§ Why we are different

Structural from the first byte, not a plugin added later.

Bolt-on GEO
  • cancel Schema retrofitted after launch, if at all
  • cancel Content architecture fixed after the fact
  • cancel A separate line item from the rest of SEO
  • cancel No measurement of what AI platforms actually do
Constellate on a Nitrosite
  • check_circle Schema.org markup on every page from launch
  • check_circle Answerable structure built into the template
  • check_circle One data engine steering SEO and GEO together
  • check_circle Primary research into AI platform citation behavior

The objective is to be the answer, not a link below it.

Every Nitrosite is built on the same static architecture across the whole site, which is what makes GEO structural rather than cosmetic. See what that architecture actually is on The Nitrosite, and read the full body of our findings on how AI platforms behave in Research.

We are candid about what GEO can and cannot promise. No one, including the platforms themselves, controls exactly which sources a model chooses to quote on a given day. What a firm can control is whether its content is structured, credible, and answerable enough to be a candidate at all.
